Vacation Nights, Designer Eyes

This month, we’re stepping away from technical details to share a more personal side of lighting design. Even while on vacation, it’s hard not to notice how light shapes our experiences at night, the atmosphere of a lively street, the mood created by a softly lit space, or the way shadows bring depth to our visual experience. In this newsletter, we’re sharing a few snapshots from travel nights, along with some designer reflections on what makes these moments memorable.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain

This remarkable architecture features many well-considered lighting details. From the entry canopy to the 180 ft tall atrium, fixtures are mounted to exposed beams or balcony railings for a sleek, clean look that is both visually appealing and practical for maintenance.

Antwerp Central Station, Belgium

The extraordinary facade of the train station uses warm-toned lights to emphasize, but not overwhelm, the beautiful Neo-Baroque architecture, drawing in and welcoming its guests. The interior lighting is carefully directed to enhance vertical architectural elements and highlight the ornate stonework and vaulted ceilings, using a mix of uplighting and accent fixtures. The form of the general lighting even works to enhance the space, appearing as part of the architecture in the form of a beautiful chandelier.

The lighting design creates a serene yet dramatic atmosphere, with warm accent lights carefully highlighting the architectural details, arches, and domed pavilions. Subtle uplighting brings depth to the garden walls and hedges, while small ground fixtures softly illuminate the pathways and sculpted trees, guiding the eye across the plaza.

Streets of Bilbao, Spain

The street lighting in Bilbao is predominantly warm and evenly distributed, with low-scale lantern-type fixtures to create a cozy and safe nighttime atmosphere. Where possible, pole lights are avoided by using sconces or building-mounted downlights to deliver a pleasant, less cluttered environment for pedestrians. Extra layers of light create contrast between historic monuments and their surrounding environment.

Hotel lighting design creates a calm and restful atmosphere by pairing warm lights with soft diffusion, casting gentle patterns on the walls that feel both cozy and elegant. The bedside fixtures are positioned to balance function and ambiance, offering enough illumination for reading without overwhelming the space. The combination of these elements makes the room a calming retreat at the end of the night.

Design is everywhere, woven into the streets we wander, the places we pause, and the moments we remember. Experiencing it firsthand, even during time away, is not only recharging but also deeply inspiring. These real encounters with light remind us why we design in the first place: to shape experiences that stay with people.
