Light as Sacred Architecture

Religious spaces are more than buildings, they are vessels for reflection, ritual, and transcendence. In sacred architecture, light is never neutral; it guides movement, shapes reverence, and defines the emotional rhythm of the space.

Founded in 1731 and recognized as one of the oldest continuously functioning religious communities in the United States, San Fernando Cathedral stands as a testament to enduring faith and layered history.

Vespr Designs recently had the honor of leading the cathedral’s lighting renovation, carefully reimagining the illumination to respect its architectural heritage while enhancing clarity, warmth, and the spiritual experience of the space. Below, we share some of the key considerations and strategies that shaped our approach.

Hierarchy of Focus

The altar, bimah, mihrab, pulpit, or meditation focal point must feel intentional, illuminated without glare, elevated without theatricality. The original lighting, with larger fixtures and a less refined design, produced noticeable glare and failed to make these features stand out. In the renovation, discreet, precisely focused luminaires were introduced to reduce glare, improve energy efficiency, and enhance color quality, allowing the richness and significance of each focal point to truly shine. The design also establishes a clear hierarchy of focus, subtly guiding attention to the most sacred and important elements within the space.

Ceiling & Vertical Illumination

Sacred spaces often celebrate height. Gentle uplighting and balanced wall washing reinforce spiritual lift while maintaining visual comfort. At San Fernando Cathedral, the historic ceiling, featuring nine stenciled patterns across 300 panels, was previously underlit and poorly revealed. The renovated design, with improved uplight distribution, restores its depth and craftsmanship, bringing the ceiling’s beauty to life. Updated lighting along the side aisles reveals wall sculptures with greater clarity while providing balanced illumination for seating areas.

Reusing Existing Infrastructure

To minimize impact on the cathedral’s historic structure, the renovation carefully reused existing fixture locations and power conduit runs wherever possible, avoiding new conduit that could damage original materials and finishes. Compact, high-performance luminaires were selected to operate within these constraints, delivering precise optics, improved efficiency, and superior color quality in a refined, minimal scale. This approach preserved the building’s architectural integrity while seamlessly upgrading the lighting system.
